AMU convocation on Apr.
25; Oscar-fame Rahman to be conferred D. Lit. degree
Bhopal, February 25 (Pervez Bari): The Executive Council of the Aligarh Muslim
University, (AMU), has decided to confer D. Lit. (Honoris Causa) degree upon
Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, the first Indian to bag two Oscars Award.
The AMU has also decided to confer the Honorary degree to noted Urdu writer
Prof. Gopichand Narang, former president of Sahitya Academy. Earlier the
Executive Council has also decided to confer the honorary degree up on Mr.
Ratan Tata, Nano Car technology fame and Prof. M. S. Swaminathan, father of
green revolution at the annual convocation which will be held on April 25 this
year.
The Executive Council of AMU has approved the recommendation of the Academic
Council and adopted the guidelines for the re-employment of teachers.
Executive Council also approved the annual statement of account as approved by
the Finance Committee of the University held on October 11, 2008.
According to a Press release issued by Dr. Rahat Abrar, Public Relations’
Officer of AMU, the Executive Council considered the recommendations of the
grievance committee as approved by the Grievance Committee and Executive
Council resolved to appoint Justice Mahmood Ali, former Judge of Delhi High
Court, for assisting Justice Faizanuddin, earlier appointed as one man enquiry
commission to conduct the time bound enquiry into the series of incidents of
indiscipline and crime that occurred in the AMU campus between June 26 and
September 2007. The Executive Committee directed the Commission to submit its
report within eight months.
The Executive Council has authorized the Vice Chancellor to take appropriate
action for the proper conduct of the case of minority character of the
University pending in the Supreme Court.
The Executive Council also expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister of
India Manmohan Singh and the Union Health Minister, Ambumani Ramados for
providing Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College the status of Institute of Medical
Sciences. The Executive Council said that the grant of 150 crore rupees to
JNMC will help in raising its status up to the desired level.
The EC also expressed thanks to the Union Minister of HRD Arjun Singh and
Minister of State for HRD Mohammad Ali Ashraf Fatmi for taking interest in the
up-gradation of the University schools and for announcing the necessary grant
for the establishment of an IAS Coaching Academy at Aligarh Muslim University.
The Executive Council passed condolence motion on the sad demise of the former
Visitor of Aligarh Muslim University and Former President of India R.
Venkataraman, former Prime Minister of India V. P. Singh, the noted scholar of
Persian Padmashri Prof. Nazeer Ahmad and Prof. Zahiruddin Malik, retired
professor, Department of History, to pay tribute to the departed souls, the

'Indo-Iranian Heritage: Importance & Relevance of Persian Language &
Literature' begins at AMU
Bhopal, February 24 (Pervez Bari): The Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran,
Syed Mahdi Nabizadah has said that the growth and continuation of the age-old
relations of Iran with the Indian sub-continent reached the peak of the
written history so that it became the foundation of all cultural ties between
the two ancient and civilized nations.
Nabizadah was addressing the inaugural function of the three-day International
Seminar on “Indo-Iranian Heritage: Importance and Relevance of Persian
Language and Literature”, organized by the Institute of Persian Research,
Aligarh Muslim University, (AMU) at Aligarh.
Nabizadah pointed out that the Persian poem and literature, introduced to many
nations the values of the knowledge and spirituality and
rejoiced the thinkers who during many centuries has been beloved of the kings
and the great personalities and had been trained by the learned
persons and writers to such an extent that no language other than Persian
could garner such a large number of poets and men of letters familiar to the
secrets of the sweetness of Persian.
He said that there had been age-old strong commercial and cultural ties
between the people living in the Shush region of southern Iran and the
Sindh valley as the items found from the remains of Mohanjodaro, Takshila and
Harappa are similar to those found from the Iranian Plateau, Tigris and
Euphrates Valley.
The Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran mentioned that most of the remains
of the Iranian culture and civilization in the Indian
sub-continent pertains to the Persian and they are well preserved in the high
number of books on history, vocabulary, Persian grammar, a variety of sciences
and mystic walks.
According to a Press release issued by Dr. Rahat Abrar, Public Relations’
Officer of AMU, inaugurating the seminar, Mr. Ali Akbar Ashari, Cultural
Advisor to the Iranian President, said that after the Iran revolution, his
country has progressed tremendously in the field of education. He said more
than five per cent people of Iran are getting higher education and 50,000
books published yearly and more than 2000 libraries were established to
provide better knowledge.
Delivering the keynote address Dr. Moosa Raza, Chairman, Southern India,
Educational Trust, Chennai, said that the very purpose of the
existence of a nation is not merely to prosper materially but to safeguard all
the stands of culture that go to make it what it is. Persian language and
literature has been one of those strong currents like yeast in bread flour
that permeates what we call Indian culture. He said that when a culture
dies, a nation dies, a country dies. For a nation’s identity is its culture,
its language, its art, its architecture and its philosophy of life, he added.
In his presidential remarks Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis, the Vice Chancellor of
Aligarh Muslim University, assured the delegates to provide all types of
support and partnership. He said that the Department of Persian of Aligarh
Muslim University is doing excellent work in the field of teaching and
research.
Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi, Director, Institute of Persian Research,
highlighted the objectives of the seminar and said a large number of
delegates from all parts of India and abroad are participating in the
three-day deliberations.
She hoped that a common heritage between Iran and India would be strengthened
further through implementing suitable programmes in the
Universities and the scientific and research centres all over the Indian
Subcontinent.
Prof. Mahdi Mohaghegh, Director, Cultural Heritage Foundation, Iran, and Mr.
Karim Najafi Barzigar, Cultural Counselor, Iran, also addressed.
Prof. Mohammad Asif Naim Siddiqui, Chairman, Department of Persian, proposed a

‘Futuristic Shape of Teaching & Training of Jarahat’ begins at AMU
Bhopal, February 21 (Pervez Bari): Inaugurating the first two-day National
Conference on “Futuristic Shape of Teaching and Training of Jarahat (Surgery)”
today at the Kennedy auditorium, in Aligarh Muslim University, (AMU), Mrs.
Panabaaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, said that
the Indian Systems of Medicine including Unani Medicine have some advantageous
features, namely their diversity and flexibility, accessibility,
affordability. These systems having broad acceptance among large section of
the people; being comparatively low cost, requiring a low level of
technological inputs and their growing economic value are such positive
qualities that make them providers of health care that the larger
sections of our people need.
Mrs. Lakshmi pointed out that the Government has launched many new schemes for
strengthening of AYUSH institutions, quality control of drugs and other
schemes for development of these systems. She said that during the Eleventh
Plan, the budget allocation for AYUSH has increased by over five times to
about Rs. 4000 crores for meeting the expenditure on implementation of these
new schemes.
According to a Press release issued by Dr. Rahat Abrar, Public Relations
Officer AMU, Minister of State for Health and family Welfare, has appealed to
the proponents of Unani Medicine and other Indian Systems of Medicine to
devote themselves to the development of the scientifically sound solutions to
various diseases and thereby cashing in on the increasing global inter-crest
in their respective systems. The quality and standard of medical education in
these systems also needs to be maintained.
In his presidential Address, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis said
that the Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College is one of the leading academic
institutions of Unani Medicine with an excellent record of providing quality
education for last nine decades. He urged the Ministry of Health and family
Welfare to upgrade this Tibbiya College to the status of All India Institution
of Unani Medicine and reposition of P.G. Courses.
Prof. Iqbal Aziz, Organizing Secretary of the National Conference, said that
the Department of Jarahat of this University is a unique Center in
India where we are giving practical basic teaching of Surgery to Unani
Scholars, so that they may adopt the principles of surgery laid by Sushruta
and Zohravi and practice with ethics so that they may teach and train in other
Unani and Ayurvedic Colleges.
Prof. Anis Ismail, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, welcomed the
delegates and said that unfortunately we are not giving much emphasis as other
basic sciences in Indian Systems of Medicine specially anatomy, physiology and
bio-chemistry. He pointed out that this is the high time to promote the much
needed interaction of traditional medicine with modern medicine in India.
On this occasion, Prof. Iqtedarul Hasan Zaidi, Dean, Faculty of Unani
Medicine, and Hm. Saud Ali Khan, principal, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College also
addressed the inaugural function. Dr. F.S. Sheerani, conducted the programme.
