Assessment of BHEL Bhopal unit for CII-EXIM BANK Award
for Business Excellence-2008 begins
Bhopal, October 15 (Pervez Bari): The CII Assessment of Bharat Heavy
Electricals Limited, (BHEL), Bhopal unit for CII-EXIM BANK Award for Business
Excellence-2008 began today with an opening meeting chaired by R. K. Singh,
Executive Director, BHEL, Bhopal and convened by Prabhat Kumar, General
Manager (P&D), BHEL, Bhopal.
The site assessment is being conducted by a high level team led by N. K. Ghosh
and other members viz. Manoj Yadav, DGM, BEL, P. N. Gupta, Head- Improvements,
Tata Steel Limited, A. S. Kulkarni, Sivaprakasam- Sr. Divisional Manager, TAFE
and S K Srivastava – GM (CS & QA) Triveni Engg. & Industries Ltd.
In his opening remarks, Singh welcomed the team members and informed that BHEL
Bhopal has been applying for CII-EXIM BANK Award for Business Excellence to
get an external perspective which shall enable the unit to strengthen its
movement towards business excellence. He marked the CII assessment as an
opportunity for improvement for BHEL, Bhopal to stand as a big stature not
only in India but also in World Power Sector.
Singh briefly discussed about the new capacity and capability building
initiatives undertaken by BHEL, Bhopal unit in last few years not only in
manufacturing but also in testing and dispatch areas which have given
miraculous results. He also briefed about the ever growing competitive market
and need to adopt new business initiatives for remaining competitive in the
global market. He mentioned about the tremendous challenges ahead and hence
need for new initiatives to sustain our position as world class player. He
called upon the team members to conduct a thorough assessment of all
operations and also recommend the opportunities that exist for further
improvement.
In his welcome address, Prabhat Kumar GM (P&D) while welcoming the team
members, informed that ‘TQM’ approach adopted as pilot project in 1995 was
extended to cover the entire unit in 1998 and the approach was christened as
Movement Towards Business Excellence, (MBE), at the same time. He also made a
presentation on the operations of BHEL, Business Environment, the ‘Total
Quality’ journey pursued, the focused initiatives taken and the strategic
planning adopted by the unit.
N. K. Ghosh, Leader, CII Assessment team addressing the gathering, explained
the purpose of the site visit. He informed that he and his team members have
gone through the Position Report submitted by BHEL Bhopal and now are here to
see for themselves some of the good work done by the organization.
Kishore Purswani, AGM (BEX) later thanked the team members for taking out time
from their busy schedule to go through the position report submitted by BHEL,
Bhopal for the award and also being in BHEL Bhopal for on-site assessment of
the roots of Total Quality Culture in the organization.
Later on, Padmashree B.L Chouksey presented his autobiography “Shramik Se
Padmashree” to the assessors.
It may be recalled here that BHEL, Bhopal unit had earlier won the Golden
Peacock National Quality Award for TQ practices in 1999, CII-EXIM Bank
Commendation Certificate for Strong Commitment to TQM in 2003 and CII-EXIM
Bank Commendation Certificate for Significant Achievement in 2004, 2006 and
