Fertilizer & Cotton Seed
Shortage in Vidarbha is Maharashtra Govt. Gift: VJAS
Bhopal, June 13 (Pervez Bari): In farm suicide prone west Vidarbha
region of Indian state of Maharashtra more than three million
distressed farmers are facing acute unprecedented cotton seed and
fertilizer artificial shortage forcing them to buy seed and fertilizer
in black market.
The Nagpur-based Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, (VJAS), has accused the
Maharashtra Government and the Central Indian Government for this
artificial shortage as they have not arranged the supply of seed and
fertilizer even though demand was known to agriculture department In
advance.
Kishor Tiwari, president of VJAS informed in press note on Friday that
this agrarian crisis has been gifted by corrupt "babus" (government
officials) who are hand-in-glove with MNC's and fertilizer traders.
Meanwhile, NDTV has reported from Latur and Amaravati districts in
Maharashtra that farmers are agitating and are on war-path to get seed
and fertilizer. here is the text of NDTV
The report said:" The protests over the fertilizer crunch in Karnataka
have already claimed one life but unrest is also building in
neighbouring Maharashtra. Angry farmers in Vidarbha's Amravati
district are agitating as the shortage hits just as sowing season
begins. By the government's own admission, the state has a 60 per cent
shortage in fertilizer supplies.
In Latur NDTV met Hari Tiwari whose debts have mounted to Rs. 50,000.
If he doesn't sow on time he'll lose a lot of crop.
''I have been going everyday. But there is no fertilizer available.
How will we grow our crops? asked a farmer. These lands are thirsty
for water but strangely farmers are hoping the rains get delayed
because they have no fertilizers.
This is a region that has given Maharashtra its Chief Minister and the
country's Home Minister. The state government says it is helpless
because supplies from the Centre have not reached on time. Also demand
has shot up with the rise in soyabean cultivation.
''Basically, trains have been delayed by the Gujjar agitation. So
supplies have not reached on time. There is a 60 per cent shortage,''
said Balasaheb Thorat, Maharashtra Agriculture Minister, reported NDTV.
But critics say its an issue that goes deeper. The soaring oil prices
have meant that the government's fertilizer subsidy to producers has
shot up with the result a cutback in supply.
Meanwhile, VJAS has urged the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh
not to look into Vidarbha seed and fertilizer crisis as rosy picture
created by the administration that there is no shortage. It is
misleading. The Indian Government should arrange requisite supply of
fertilizer and seed in order to avoid law and order problem in the
state, Tiwari added. (pervezbari@eth.net)
