No alliance with Uma Bharti in Madhya Pradesh: SP
BHOPAL: Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh on Tuesday said there was
no question of his party entering into an alliance with Uma Bharti's Bharatiya
Janshakti Party for the November 25 Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh.
"There is a great deal of ideological differences between the SP and the
Bharatiya Janshakti Party," he told a press conference here.
The SP leader said if Bharti, a former BJP leader, was the South Pole of
Indian politics, he was its North Pole.
He said there were ideological similarities between BJP and Bharti's party.
Just as the SP would never join hands with the BJP, it will never ally with
Uma's party also.
The SP leader said the BJP had "used" Uma Bharti for winning the December 2003
Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and after coming to power, it dumped her.
Asked if Bharti would emerge as a third force in Madhya Pradesh, Singh said he
did not know whether that will happen, but she will surely emerge as a force
to reckon with in the state, where the politics has been dominated till now by
two parties - BJP and Congress.
The SP said he had lot of affection for Bharti who also held him in high
regard. Singh said he was confident that Uma would harm the BJP's poll
prospects in a big way.

Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program 2009
Bhopal, October 21, 2008: The Ford Foundation International
Fellowships Program (IFP) today announced the inviting of applications for the
2009 program. This program seeks to build a new generation of social justice
leaders in India by offering an opportunity for quality higher education. The
program is especially designed to support candidates from groups that have
historically lacked access to higher education. The Pre-Application Form and
selection criteria details are at www.ifpsa.org. The deadline for
pre-applications is 15 November 2008.
Forty candidates will be selected following an intensive search and selection
process. The pre-application and final application forms will be reviewed and
evaluated by panels of experts from academia, the social development sector
and other related disciplines. Shortlisted candidates will be further screened
through regional and national interviews. The IFP India program will assist
selected fellows in university admission process, paying for travel, tuition
fees, living costs and logistical arrangements related to commencing their
study programs.
Applicants should be Indian nationals or permanent residents, currently
residing in the states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh or Uttarakhand.
They must hold a Bachelor's or a Master's degree from a recognized Indian
university with at least 55% marks. Eligible candidates must have at least
three year's full-time work experience relevant to their proposed area of
study. They should also have experience in leadership and community service or
development related activities.
As of September 2008, IFP India has selected 240 Fellows for Masters and PhD
degrees. Of these, 160 Fellows have already completed their studies. While
several Fellows are still completing their studies abroad, over seventy five
percent have returned to India to begin exciting careers that creates value
for their regions and communities. IFP India helps returned fellows (alumni)
raise their capacities through knowledge, skills and networks to become
effective leaders working to improve lives in their communities.
Mr Vivek Mansukhani, Director, Ford Foundation International Fellowships
Program said, "There is an increasing need for funding education for committed
people, who would normally not have access to quality and focused higher
education. IFP is making a long term investment in building capacity where it
is needed most. This program's mission is clear; to create opportunities for
real social and economic change through a network of people who work at the
grass roots level."
On this occasion, Surekha Talari, an IFP alumnus who completed her MPhil
degree from the University of Cambridge, UK, said "My studies gave me an
opportunity to place my organizational efforts in an academic framework and
inspired me to add new dimensions, such as research and advocacy, to my work.
Now as Executive Director of SUDHAAR, an NGO working in the area of prison
reforms, I feel I am better equipped to address issues of social justice and
human rights in criminal justice with stronger conviction and an enhanced
world view. IFP has been a unique opportunity to understand humanitarian
efforts in the field of criminal justice across cultures and countries through
an international university education. It has been a unique journey through
which I have become more aware of my social responsibilities."
The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) was launched in
2001 to broaden access to higher education and help build a new generation of
social justice leaders, hailing from groups and communities who have lacked
access to equity and quality in higher education. Funded through the largest
single grant ever made by the Ford Foundation, $280 million over ten years,
with a further $75 million added half way through the program, this program
offers fellowships in Russia and 21 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin
America.
Before the International Fellowships Program other fellows who received Ford
Foundation funding have gone on to become leaders in institutions around the
world and have helped build global knowledge in fields ranging across the
natural and social sciences as well as the humanities and the arts. The
International Fellowships Program underscores the Ford Foundation's belief
that education enables people to improve their own lives as well as to assist
others in the common pursuit of more equitable and just societies. See
