Police
forcibly gets slain Prof. son's fast-unto-death broken
Himanshu resolves to take out 'Nayay Rath Yatra' all over MP to
expose BJP Govt.
Bhopal, March 21 (Pervez Bari): Madhya Pradesh Police swooped on
Himanshu Sabharwal, son of slain Prof. H.S. Sabharwal, who was on his
fast-unto-death here since March 18 demanding Central Bureau of
Investigation, (CBI), probe into his father's broad day-light murder,
and forcibly shifted him from the site of his ongoing fast to admit
him in Hamidia Hospital where he was made to break his four-day-old
indefinite hunger strike.
Himanshu protested vehemently his removal from Roshanpura square, the
site where he was sitting on fast-unto-death, as a result of which
there was a scuffle with policemen. Congress leader Arif Masood along
with his supporters and others also resisted the police action against
Himanshu and joined the scuffle.
However, in the face of large police force Himanshu had to give in and
allowed himself to be taken to the hospital where hew was examined by
doctors and discharged. Later, on the advice of his supporters and
well-wishers he broke his fast-unto-death under protest.
Before the police arrived to take action the power supply to the tent
where Himanshu was observing fast was cut to stop the screening of
video footage leading to his father's murder. After shifting Himanshu
to hospital, tent and other paraphernalia was also removed by the
police from the site of fast-unto-death.
Himanshu not to be cowed down by the developments earlier in the day
later told this correspondent that his purpose of fast-unto-death has
been served as the issue of his father Prof. Sabharwal's murder most
foul has once again become alive and now his mission is to take it
forward to the people's court.
For this he would take out "Nayay Rath Yatra" (Justice rally on
wheels) in about ten days time which would travel all over the state.
The justice rally which would actually be video on wheels would show
video footage to the common man as to how his father was murdered and
tell about the Bharatiya Janata Party ruled Madhya Pradesh
Government's dubious role in trying to save the accused, Himanshu
added.
Meanwhile, a people's inquiry committee headed by veteran journalist
L. S. Hardenia has been formed to probe Prof. Sabharwal's murder.
It may be recalled here that Himanshu at a Press conference here on
March 13 had announced to undertake his fast-unto-death from March 20
if his demand for CBI into his father's murder is not met till then.
However, he pre-poned it in the light of BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's refusal to accede to his
request.
Chouhan following Himanshu's open letter to him had without giving
second thought immediately told electronic media reportedly that he
would only abide by the Supreme Court directive which had transferred
Prof. Sabharwal's case outside Madhya Pradesh to Nagpur in Maharashtra
and not order CBI inquiry into the case.
The Supreme Court had earlier transferred the trial from Ujjain in
Madhya Pradesh to Nagpur in Maharashtra, with a direction for its
completion within two months. The order came on a petition by Himanshu,
who apprehended that a free and fair trial was not possible in Madhya
Pradesh.
It may be pointed out here that Prof. Sabharwal of Ujjain's Madhav
college, died on August 26, 2006 after he was allegedly attacked by
Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, (ABVP), the BJP’s student wing,
leaders protesting against the cancellation of student union election
in the university. The professor had declared the election null and
void. Protesting his decision, some students of the college had
allegedly attacked him brutally, leading to his immediate death.
It may be mentioned here that five members of ABVP, face murder
charges. All the 54 witnesses had turned hostile in the Ujjain trial
court. (pervezbari@eth.net)
